Ohaeawai School in the Far North, serves a predominantly Maori Community and has a decile rating of two. Its pupils come from a vast distance around, and the school enjoys strong local support.
Parents take an active role in activities and events, and last year they helped the school raise funds for an excursion to National Park for children in Years 5 and 6.
A top-up from the Lottery Grants Board’s Northland Community Committee made the trip possible, and for most of the children it was the first time they had ever seen or experienced snow.
Many of the children had never experienced or participated in mountainside activities so the skill and knowledge growth was enormous.
Lottery Community Committees fund projects from removing barriers, such as isolation and poverty, to community participation.
